What man calls civilization – always results in deserts

Sharing some interesting quotes about “civilization”.

1. “If there hadn’t been women we’d still be squatting in a cave eating raw meat, because we made civilization in order to impress our girlfriends.” Orson Welles

2. All of us have to be prevaricators, hypocrites, and liars every day of our lives; otherwise the social structure would fall into pieces the first day. We must act in one another’s presence just as we must wear clothes. It is for the best.” O. Henry

3.“So the story of man runs in a dreary circle, because he is not yet master of the earth that holds him.” Will Durant

4. The human eye has to be one of the cruelest tricks nature ever pulled. We can see a tiny, cone-shaped area of light right in front of our faces, restricted to a very narrow band of the electromagnetic spectrum. We can’t see around walls, we can’t see heat or cold, we can’t see electricity or radio signals, we can’t see at a distance. It is a sense so limited that we might as well not have it, yet we have evolved to depend so heavily on it as a species that all other perception has atrophied. We have wound up with the utterly mad and often fatal delusion that if we can’t see something, it doesn’t exist. Virtually all of civilization’s failures can be traced back to that one ominous sentence: ‘I’ll believe it when I see it.’ David Wong

5.The “norm” for humanity is love.
Brutality is an aberration.
We are not sinners by nature.
We learn to be bad.
We are taught to stray from our good paths.
We are made to be crazy by other people who are also crazy and who draw for us a map of the world which is ugly, negative and fearful.” Jack D. Forbes

6. Now is your turn – continue phrase: “Civilization will not survive without..?

Civilization will not survive while we continue to dumb down education, skills, and common sense.

      • Jim says:

oh we definitely need women. we wouldn’t be here without women. plus who is gonna supervise us and keep us guys in line???

  2. Compromise. Great post!

  3. Jerry Laiche says:

    “Civilization will not survive without..?”
First the history teacher in me:
(1) Civilization can only exist once a group of people can produce more than they need to survive, that is a SURPLUS.
(2) the root word of civilization is CITY, the central concept of a city is cooperation.
So it would follow then that civilization would not survive without a surplus and cooperation. But that’s pretty boring.

After all, ants and bees cooperate to produce surpluses. Charlie Chaplain’s Modern Times and of course, Fritz Lang’s Metropolis, not to mention Orwell’s 1984 or Huxley’s Brave New World graphically depict humanity being transformed to ants and/or bees and the ridiculous results of that happening.
Humanity’s saving grace is its infinite individual variety – all of it’s philosophies, tragedies, comedies. the deadly seriousness of bank accounts, bills, and breakages, the eternal silliness of Mardi Gras (after all 12th Night was yesterday), most of the Internet, our outlandish fantasies, the US Congress and Donald Trump (although, he is getting too close to reality these days and starting to screw up people’s lives). Humanity continues to fall in love (pretty silly if looked at objectively), start wars – does anybody ever really win?, produce art, books, and music. In my youth, I once told my wife that the same hands and mind that created the “Moonlight Sonata” also created the atomic bomb! I don’t know if she was impressed as I pontificated – but I used to smoke a professorial pipe back then. And I still like to put on airs.

    So to answer the question;
. . . humanity’s endless follies and foibles, and after all – some days there’s pie.

ON SECOND THOUGHT – it’s probably music.

haha very creative answer! Enjoyed it 🙂 you should write a post about the topic. Civilisation will not survive without Jerry Laiche in it 😂😂

  4. Jerry Laiche says:

BTW, I love Well’s quote and was so excited to the quote from Will Durant. He is my all time favorite historian and philosopher. Another quote from him is inscribed on the back of my iPad. Primum est edare, diendi philosopharii. It has been my motto for decades – “Eating comes before Philosophy.”

  5. George F. says:

Trillionaires need to share the wealth with at least the people who do the grunt work for them. That alone could cause a revolution if just one person started it. Imagine if Jeff Bezo’s woke up one morning and said…”Ya know, a few trillion is enough money. I’ll just double the minimum wage for everybody who works for me…” OMG! That’s how civilization can survive…

    • Victoria Ray NB says:

what’s wrong with doubling the minimum wage?
anyway, I’m not sure sharing the wealth is the answer :))

  6. Hyperion says:

Love the quotes Ray. And I like the opportunity you give me to throw in my great wisdom I’ve accumulated over the years reading Terry Pratchett’s Discworld Chronicle. Civilization will not survive without Beer, Bread, Butter, Sugar, tight pants, and loose women. It’s really that simple.

  7. Tom Darby says:

    the Bird Box.

  8. Civilization will not survive if we avoid humor and chocolate

  9. Edwin says:

Civilization will not survive without Walmart and sizable rocks, esp rocks. They don’t require a mortgage.

  10. Civilization will not survive without cellphones or narcissism.

    • Victoria Ray NB says:

narcissism is born with us and die with us haha
      cellphones? I expect only more…and more …and more… 😱🤪

  11. kinkyacres says:

Bird Box….agreed! With all the negatives, what is gained by surviving?

  12. Edwin says:

    Re civilization needing women…

Most women are more intelligent than most men, and this is a secret they keep to themselves. It’s like the friggin’ Illuminati or something. Except that this group contains about half of the Earth’s population. I could write a dissertation on this topic but will spare you and my semi-arthritic fingers.

Guys are too gullible to effectively keep our civilization going, so the responsibility goes to women by default.

    • Victoria Ray NB says:

you mean, that’s why we are in such crappy situation right now lol
ahhhh, I see where you are going…its women fault again haha

  13. Tell me about it!!! Nature pulled a cruel one with number four, why can’t we see through people’s clothes whilst they’re wearing them? 🙁 .
