Did you ever hear of the book – men are from Mars, women are from Venus? You probably did, if you’ve had relationship troubles and needed a book to understand your partner. But during your weird shower moments, you might have thought – can men ever be from Mars? Can they have the smug, red planet as their adopted home? Imagine the amazing possibilities. For plus-sized people, I hear your mass reduces to about a third of what is expected on earth. Good news big fellas – you can throw away your healthy meal plans and gym subscriptions.

Mars, here we come!

Err, sorry to burst your bubble, chubby, if you’re heavy-sized on earth, you’re likely to remain relatively heavy-sized on planet Mars. Now run along and do your squats!

For so long, people have fantasized about living on Mars. Scientists have made conjectures on the practicality of making the red dusty sphere our home.  In fact, a couple of best-selling movies have been released based on that exact theme.

What if life suddenly ceases to be sustainable on our dear planet earth?
Would we have any reasonable hope of a refuge on Mars?
Most importantly, will Starbucks have a Martian branch?

These are questions that have plagued a lot of minds. In fact, tech mogul Elon Musk recently expressed his desire to launch people to Mars within a decade. Someone is really taking this expedition seriously.

Good one Elon!

But the more important question is: how feasible is this idea, really? Should we even bother trying to colonize Mars? Shouldn’t Mr. Musk rather be committing his funds to more profitable ventures – like buying me tonnes of pizzas daily? What obstacles await us? Because let’s face it, looks can be deceptive. That beckoning red exterior of a rose bush may actually be concealing a bed of thorns. If we can learn from a bush, we can learn from Mars.

Be wary of planet Mars, friends… be wary.

Now we’ll address some of the practical questions as we attempt to unravel this quiet, grim world. First of all, we’re not nearly there yet. We have made significant progress however – we’ve sent a vessel to Mars successfully. When Curiosity first landed on the planet in 2012, it was met with high fives and fist bumps. By the way, ‘Curiosity’ here doesn’t imply a sense of inquisitiveness. It’s only the rover (vessel) that first landed on Mars.

Like any great accomplishments and breakthroughs, we basked in it for a moment.
But as the dust settled,
and the champagne dried,
we realized the enormity of the task ahead.
As a teenager coming to the sudden realization that there was a tough life ahead of high school, we shuddered. We’ve still only managed to send a small vessel to Mars; in spite of all the money and expertise utilized. Curiosity took a few pictures, but that was it. It had no capacity to make a return trip.

This solemn fact gives us an idea of the difficult proposition ahead.

But what if we’ve somehow managed to find a way to build a large enough vessel to transport people to Mars? What if we could now make efficient return trips? Would that make the dream that much more feasible?

I’m guessing you must know my answer – it’s no! 😂

The first immediately apparent hurdle is the harsh atmosphere on Mars, which is mostly carbon dioxide. If you were an attentive science student in school, you must be thinking – oxygen is what should be predominating right, not carbon dioxide? If humans are to have a realistic chance of long-term survival, we’ll need to have a higher atmospheric oxygen supply. Yet another obstacle to consider is the low temperature found on Mars – vastly cooler than the most extreme polar regions on earth. When one considers this, plus the relative significant gravity-loss, it becomes apparent that space suits would be our everyday wear – cool initially, but we should need some fresh air after a while.

Yet another important aspect to consider is the sustainability of food supply.

I mean, we can only float so much
on the dusty streets before hunger pangs reveal themselves.
Hunger is no respecter of planet or terrain.

But with a thin atmosphere as well as reduced gravity and sunlight, it could be a herculean task getting things to grow. There will need to be a very effective modality of converting the little solar energy available in the atmosphere into fuel for sustainable plant growth. Selecting the best crops to grow may also be a difficult task. The limited room for plant growth on a spaceship would mean only high yielding crops would be considered. So if your favorite cereal takes a lot of space in the garden, you could be in for a hard time on Mars. 😉🧐

Also important is the need for sustainable buildings and infrastructure. Mars One has proposed a hi-tech system comprising rigid modules with an expandable living area. Such may be further expanded to create a community of living units shielded from the harsh radiation. Individual units come with their own individual air supply, while greenhouse technology is proposed to accompany the setup. These ideas come with their own unique, and possibly insurmountable obstacles, as you might expect.

Mars is the most Earth-like planet known to us.

But thinking that means we can comfortably inhabit it is akin to assuming an ape can pass for a human at thanksgiving – based on its humanoid form. There are still a number of gears to shift through technology-wise, while a lot more money will need to be spent to actualize the dream. Even at best, your quality of living on earth will likely be vastly inferior to that found on earth.

You might never have the privilege to relax on an exotic beach on a cool Saturday morning or watch a lion devour its prey on a safari.

Perhaps we should be honoring and appreciating life on planet earth more. After all, we have chocolate ice cream here!!! 💃🕺🍩🤪

  1. 0K, there are some major plot holes in this piece. Inhabiting Mars is an idea, but WE humankind think of having the same life on Mars like on Earth. That is not the case with inhabiting the planets. It is most likely that we will stay on our ships in the Mar’s orbit and draw supplies from Mars, like drilling for water, taking in the soil for planting food and use elements to trade it with Earth. So, no real contact with the surface.

    If you actually want to land and live on Mars, we would need around 500 years of active terra-forming to construct an atmosphere sustainable life. You do it by finding a huge depots of water and turning them into vapor. Also, we would use that water to extract oxygen from it and filter ozone layer to make a barrier. With gas extraction, we will be doing the mixture in the air, so heavy gases will be the one who keep the light gases from going into the space, then it comes the air filtering to get Earth’s saturation and breathable air. Now, in that climate we could start planting the Earth’s cultures.

    Tu finance such a big task, we should find a reason of why is worth of our trouble. If Mars is rich with noble metals, or some rare compound, we could use that to finance the ‘Colony’ project.

    About that chubby people. Our body is susceptible to change in space and illnesses because of the sterile climate of the ships. Our bones will grow fragile, our form would stretch (we will grow), our cells could start to mutate due to radioactive surroundings in space and every illness we get could be lethal. Even a common cold could kill you in a most painful way. To prevent such things, MIR station has ordered that every person on the International Space Station has to work out for two hours daily to repel the influence of space and keep the body in proper function – mimicking the all of the activity our muscles would have with living on Earth and mimicking the influence of gravitation. Without gravity to force our muscles to contract and be of use, we could develop a serious muscle dysphoria, meaning that our muscles would just die. So, if you are chubby and in space, you’ll be highly motivated to get in shape or die.

    Mars Curiosity Rover is not the first one who landed on Mars. He is around 12th to get there. China, Russia and other states with space programs have successfully reached Mars.

    And the writer of this text is male. Young male, but male never the less. 😀

    • It was very interesting answer, almost an article I have to say. How do you know all that? OK, I knew abou the fragile bones (heard somewhere, but not all the details). I think some people think it worth the trouble – moving or building the life on Mars – because they are preparing PLAN B: in case…if everything goes to Hell we’ll get a lil red paradise and continue to enjoy our life.
      About terra-formed colony/life – agreed, it can take maybe even more than 500 years. I feel like we stuck right now and we need some kind of new Einstein-revolution in science.
      And I hope (but I think we will) we won’t destroy Mars as we destroying the Earth. Plus I heard that long time ago Mars had water and air to breathe… what happened? who knows 😉 maybe #marsianHUMANS? 🧐😱👀

      • Mars has only traces of water. The NASA probe has landed today on the surface of Mars. It’s kinda big news now. 😀 And I do support the life in space. If we could build enough housing area in space, and leave it spinning around earth, or Moon, we could live in their vicinity, but not on the ground.

        First, we should really find a solution to Earth’s problem, before we look up for a place in space. Focus on reality, but still have an idea of space. That is the most healthy way of thinking.

        TerraForming can last for many years, but 500 is for starters. It would cost a lot to be done, that’s why no good scientist is actually thinking about it, as it is next to impossible for now. They are all focused on actual living in space. If we would to build a giant ring around a planet, and let it go to the planet to spin it, harness the magnetic and gravity field around the object, we could actually bring life. Power source – Sun, water source – planet, – food source – space herbal fields. So, I propose a rim-world as the only solution to live in space.

        Mars has no atmosphere, but a mist of clouds that occasionally appear. Mars is a dead planet, no heat signal has been taken from deep scanning. Even if we made a breathable atmosphere, there won’t be any heat to keep the seasons, so we would be stuck with the eternal frost. Life on Mars? It is noted that some bacteria do live in the Mars’s river beds, under the ice, in the ground. So life off Earth is a possible idea, however, a human like form life off Earth is not.

        Terra forming is not a brand new idea or a theory. We already know the beginning of Earth, how our atmosphere was made, from where did we get all of the oxygen, how the crust of the Earth was revived and the circle of life that came to be. We would only recreate the same on other planets, yet we ind those that are already in the ‘Goldilocks Zone’ more tempting to inhabit, that invest a lot of time and resources in ‘bringing up the dead’.

      • I remember you are writing sci fi…but how do you remember all that? I mean when you are writing about some spinning & terra forming – I feel like I heard about it, but all my knowledge is “general” tho. U r more specific. I understand you see Mars through your eyes of the writer & the eyes of modern science.
        I love sci fi because it goes beyond that…beyond our craziest expectations or dreams 🙂
        And nope, I don’t want to live on a ring around the planet. I love the ground 🙂

      • My knowledge is also general. Lol. I just let my brain wonder off with the next logical step, something I’d do if I had Elon’s bank. Nothing more than that.

        And about those rings around the globe, well. you’ll miss all of the scenery, the long sunsets, long dawn, shivering lights under your feet, occasional thunderstorm below your window and the sight of our blue marble. 😀

  2. Male writer – very fact driven 🙂 But the style is ok and the author can pull you along in the story. The image of chubby earthlings bouncing about on Mars brings the image to mind of people colliding with those giant balls. LOL! To contemplate leaving Earth to live on Mars is a nice exercise in mental masturbation. We should try just plain living fist. I don’t think many are doing that on Earth right now. Living on Mars would be living in constant bubbles – space suits, contained units. Domes. But people live on Earth in their own bubbles. Square boxes. Driving square boxes to other square boxes to do work for other people in square boxes so they can go to other square boxes and buy things packaged in square boxes. We’ve filled this world with a billion poisons. I’m not sure transporting those to Mars would bring it back to life 🙂 And it would be cold there too – really cold. Which reminds me – time to build a fire. It’s cold here right now, but not as cold as Mars. One thing great about reading and writing is that it can transport us to other worlds without leaving our boxes or bubbles 🙂

    • I so agree with you about “square boxes”! I’m worried about the outcome – they wanna find more resources (to destroy poor Mars as they are destroying the Earth right now), they wanna build a regular flights to the moon, what about the Earth? It can tolerate, endure, suffer…
      Also to bring on Mars the human greed and our fkd up minds – is the beginning of Mars End.

      • I have no doubt. One of the scariest things that can happen – is actually building life on Mars or Moon bcz then ppl will drop/kick the Earth like it’s *nothing* to them. It will be destroyed and forgotten completely: by “greedy bosses” & uncaring humans

  3. Male Earthling and beach dweller here. Well, I was signing up for that vacay on Mars, guess I will put away the trunks.
    I don’t know enough about the subject, but I think we are still quite far from colonalizing other planets for many of the reasons
    you listed. But once they do, you can read all about it at tripadvisor.

  4. Although re Mr Musk, I tend to have similar thoughts – i.e. if you don’t know what to do with your money them, um, give some to me.
    On the John Gray book, I did hear a spin on the title: ‘Women are from Venus, Men are from Hell’ – but would not dream of making such a sexist joke myself.

    • ah, Elon…he should probably leave the Earth and permanently move to Mars lol but if seriously…I think people should think how to create and save (the Earth/air/water..right here and right now) than to think how to take step up and destroy one more planet.
      By the way, I’m sure men think that they are from Venus lol and we, women are from Hell :))

  5. All the negatives expressed! Elon Musk is a doer! Launching a rocket, putting multiple satellites in orbit, turning the remaining fuselage around, and having it land back on earth within 16 ft of the pad it took off from! Saving this planet will take doers! Sitting and waiting for someone to do it for us, is why we are in the situation on earth that we are!

  6. Seeing as I’m a space geek can I say that was an interesting post. To put in my two pennyeth lol, we’re never ever going to visit Mars so stop dreaming and take better care of our earth instead………………. oh and Martian soil is dry radioactive ‘sand’ devoid of ANY organic material so growing potatoes is out!!!

As a former scientist who supported NASA projects and later the chief analyst for 65% of all federal research, science and technology, I can attest to the fact that we will expand our mission to Mars for one reason, not to inhabit, but to establish forward launching bases for missions outside our galaxy and beyond. We will hopscotch our way to paradise or doom. We are searching for inhabitable planets not dead planets to colonize. We have found many likely candidates. The assumption is made that the program will endure well into the future and advance as technology advances such that those things deemed impossible now will be probable in the future. We are making tremendous advances in AI and biomass genetic programming. We will create Cybrid humans supported by AI with the purpose to find and report the mysteries of the universe that we will colonize. I could go on but it might scare you. That’s not what I want to do. Best stick with science fiction now. Its much more controllable. 😉

      • Oh, Ray, but I find floating in space with just a molecular barrier suit on and my trusty neutron ray gun at my side as I descend through the clouds to some unknown planet scary as hell but also exhilerating because I do love a good adventure. Goosebumps tickle like crazy in a molecular barrier suit.

      • It’s all good Ray. I like Sci-fi. I can just let my earthbound misfit self join in and go with it no matter if it’s Mars or Alpha Centuri. I am one of those people that don’t set boundaries for what I read and enjoy. If it’s good writing, I like it. With wide genre approach, life can be quite interesting inside my head.
