Book Review “The Book of HIDDEN THINGS”, Francesco Dimitri

Once upon a time, Ray went to the book store because he wanted to read a fantasy book and… bought “The Book of HIDDEN THINGS”.

“God works in mysterious ways.” William Cowper

Pitch:
4 friends (Art, Fabio, Tony, and Mauro) have a pact – to meet up on the same day every year in the small hometown, Casalfranco, in southern Italy. What can go wrong? They are fully grown dudes with small kids, boring jobs, and broken dreams.
Attention: 18+

“We are like islands in the sea;
separate on the surface but connected in the deep.”
William James

This book has everything I like. Real but messed up relationships, sex, dirty desires, betrayal, crime, mafia, crazy sister, a fantasy world, LGBT, dancing, more crime, books, lazy police… and a lot of sun, pizza, wine, and olives.

Genre: drama with a touch of fantasy/mystery. I found the book in the section “Fantasy”, but I have to admit it reads like a thriller.

This is a story about real friendship.
About trust and equality, sacrifice and commitment, danger and love, kindness and passion.
This is a story about hope.
Being able to see that there’s light despite all of the darkness.
This is a story about the boy.
The boy who couldn’t accept the world he is living in. A real dreamer!

Girls will get together just to get together. Right? Guys, however, need an activity as an excuse. In our case, it is a Pact. Summer 2019, and Art suddenly doesn’t show up. So, his 3 loyal friends decide, (they are anyway staying in the hometown for a couple of days) to visit him and find out the reason for Art’s absence.

Knock-knock! The house is dark.
“Nobody is home!” Answering Marijuana.

Yes, Art is the dealer (he proudly grows marijuana in his yard).
Yes, Art is a BDSM addict, slaughtering young bodies in his basement.
And yes, Art is a person they know nothing about.
But the biggest problem – he is gone. Again. Disappeared. Melted away. Just as many years ago, when they were kids.

Let’s go back in time. Art’s favorite hobby? To dissolve in the air and then, all of a sudden, arrive at the door of his friend with: ‘I’m hungry as hell! Make me a sandwich!’

Make yourself feel comfortable, Arthuro!
Wanna sandwich? – Welcome!

Nobody ever found out what happened with Art during those 7 days. The whole Italy was looking for a boy who got lost in the olive grove. His parents were devastated. His friends were suspected by the police. But hey, whatever… he is here right now. Give him a damn sandwich!

The secret:
I have to let you in on the secret. Art has been kidnapped by the Queen of the Kingdom of Hidden Things. Yes! There’s a real Kingdom of Hidden Things and the queen, usually naked, lurking around, and looking for the cute small boys between old olive trees of Casalfranco.
Sure, you can visit that Kingdom too.

Where’s Art’s marijuana?
Ray need a moment to draw you a map…

How to trespass (from the real world to the hidden one):
The answer is “sacrifice”.
Kill the most precious soul, someone you truly love and enjoy the ride with the glowing tits of the Queen.

Excerpt from the book: “I fucked her with my fingers until I couldn’t anymore, and then, when my fingers were too exhausted to move, I let her go. Her perfect ass propped on my hands, as I brought the tip of my dick to the side of her knickers.
I entered her, pushing my hips…”

“It’s bullshit to think of friendship and romance as being different. They’re not. They’re just variations of the same love. Variations of the same desire to be close.” Rachel Cohn

!! According to the Bible, God commanded Abraham to offer his son, Isaac, as a sacrifice. After Isaac is bound to an altar, God stops Abraham at the last minute, saying “now I know you fear God.” Abraham looks up, sees a ram, and sacrifices it instead of Isaac.

If you think that you’d suddenly see a ram instead of your dog, daughter, husband or neighbor – beep beep! You are wrong. The time of “kind” queens (gods) is OVER. We are in the XXI century!

Heroes/main characters:

#1 Fabio

  • celebrity photograph, but with an empty pocket
  • hates his father (who is in the middle of a battle with Alzheimer)
  • no family, no kids
  • fucks like a monster. And when he doesn’t, he dreams about it. Mostly about a wife of his friend, Mauro.

“I wonder what Fabio is doing,” thought Mauro. “I wish I were there to be doing it, too.”

#2 Mauro

  • unhappy parent of two
  • a very busy lawyer who still loves his wife
  • responsible, boring, practical, smart

#3 Tony

  • gay (looking for a partner)
  • from a family who has powerful friends inside of Corona (mafia)
  • still believes in God
  • knows how to handle a gun
  • angry, strong, lonely

#4 Art

The weirdest boy/man you’ll ever meet. First of all, he really believes in the Kingdom of Hidden Things. Second, he says he got the abilities to heal people. Third, he kills his own dog and kidnaps a daughter of Mauro. Why? To enter the world of Hidden Things, silly you!..

Excerpt from the book: “I saw a light, of an eerie, delicate shade of sapphire. There was a woman, the most beautiful woman I’d ever seen. Naked. She put a hand on my crotch and I followed her… she jumped on me and started fucking me like there was no tomorrow. And then we talked. Then, she fed me some fruit. That became our pattern: we would fuck, eat, drink, talk, and then fuck again.”

Wow, what a special PLACE, Francesco!
You are fulfilling every man’s dream
!

We don’t know the reason for Art’s crazy behavior:

  • marijuana
  • the death of his parents
  • too much sex with the Queen
  • reading/writing – Art’s book (pages attached to the novel)

“The best mirror is an old friend.” George Herbert

Female characters
:

#1 Anna

– beautiful, extreme fucker, brave, mom of two, driven by desire and anxiety

Dialogue from the book:

Mauro: You were fucking one of my best friends while I was risking my life, and you don’t feel bad?

Elena: So what? It was only sex, and I’ll take sex over death any day of the week. I enjoyed it – yes, I did – and I don’t feel guilty, not in the least. I thought I would, but I don’t. Sex is sex. It doesn’t change… us.

Mauro: Us has a lot of problems. And this is the worst apology I have ever heard.

Elena: I’m not apologizing…

Mauro dives into rising tides of paranoia – does Fabio have a bigger dick? did he make her pregnant? Strong weed and bad news don’t go well together.

You will also meet 2 mad girls:

  • Tony’s sister – Elena (the head of a local mafia)
  • The BDSM chick with a gun – Silvana

The structure and writing style: the story told by each hero, like a chain of events. Nice flow, in my eyes – a perfect commercial fiction.

Likes:

  • hilarious, very easy to read
  • erotic thoughts of Fabio
  • Corona and Dance of Swords
  • crazy mind of Art and his book of Hidden Things
  • The characters are very real, makes you start to believe they really exist, as well as The Kingdom of Hidden Things.

Dislikes:

Hmm… I don’t know. I just fucking love those guys and their messed up lives. Magic, sex, mysterious world. It makes any heart sink…
Ok. Maybe the ending. It was funny (in some childish way), but I wouldn’t say I disliked it. 50/50.

Wish: book 2 maybe? Dream on, Ray, dream on…
Rate:4,5

“I don’t feel very much like Art today,” said Art One.
“Don’t worry,” said Art Two. “I’ll bring you marijuana and a perfect ass until you do.”

    • I have to say there’s not so much fantasy in this novel lol I don’t read fantasy books (I honestly dislike them, but don’t tell anyone 😉) & when I picked one – it was a mix of drama + thriller lol 😂 I also read some reviews and a lot of ppl were disappointed about the genre… because if alllllll fantasy is like this (erotica, humor, screwed relationships, mafia, murder) – then Ray is in… 😂😂

      • Mmmaybe. It’s relaxing book to read. I’m not sure it is something for u, but there’s probably only 10% of fantasy in that novel 🙂 mostly – relationships & mafia 😂 problems.

  1. Also like stuff where an ensemble cast make friends when young then we follow their different paths and they meet up down the line. May not be original but has so much scope for character development and tension.

    • Yep, agreed. This isn’t original idea/theme but I could relate to each hero (doesn’t happen often :)).
They (all 4) are so restless, anxious…”agonizing” & funny = feels real 🙂
