Let’s Talk: The P Word – reblog

Because “the poet” or “the poem” means – boring...at least teens at the school think so.
It’s also some way cryptic = people don’t like what they can’t grasp = sometimes they can’t relate too.
Then the image of “the poet” is often: 1) a crazy lonely dude in the long dirty coat/with long hair or without hair+add odd glasses OR 2) a romantic chick madly in love or heart broken, crying over the past.
Mmm sad though. Because the poetry is so much more than the poetry 💙 😉👋

  1. Exactly my sentiments. People seem to not care about poetry anymore, even in Facebook, you won’t get appreciated by writing a very nice poem, we’re all lucjy because we have this community where we can share our talent.

  2. I love poetry! I’ve been writing and publishing more of mine on WordPress lately.
My book group read a collection of poetry in April and it allowed for a wonderful discussion. Some of our group admitted they don’t typically read poetry but loved having the insights of others to better understand it.
My group is made up of highly educated women who are all well read and we spend the whole time discussing the books, not socializing or drinking wine as other groups are known for.
    Keep writing!

  4. Poetry … aah who do we write for and to what end … and what of the audience? Writing is an art form and all art is a means of self expression. I weave words not yarn; mix metaphors not paint; rhythm words not chords. Words are my brushes and paper is my canvas. Poetry is the screen shot, screen grab of the writing world, fitting as much as possible in a succinct concise form. It is the literary equivalent of a selfie, a tweet – the Instagram of writing.

True I get eyes rolls and frowns or condescending smiles, when I say I write poetry … but in truth I don’t really care, I write for me, and throughout history very few poets have been lauded or earned vast sums of money – it mostly happens after their death (he says cynically). People today should find it easier to read poetry, as we live in the the world of the tweet, the fast food drive through, the instant gratification … poetry can do all of that! 🙂 inside a page …or even less, so lets keep on writing to our (imaginary) audience and not let groans and eye-rolls deter …A poet writes poetry because they love poetry!!

In closing, ponder the words of John Keating from the film: Dead Poets Society:

We don’t read and write poetry because it’s cute.
We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race.
And the human race is filled with passion.
And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life.
But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for.
    To quote from Whitman:
“O me! O life!…of the questions of these recurring; of the endless trains of the faithless
of cities filled with the foolish; what good amid these, O me, O life?”

    Answer. That you are here – that life exists, and identity;
That the powerful play (goes on) and you may contribute a verse.

    What will your verse be?

    • True 🙂 agreed with you that poetry is an art = self expression. And the real poets or ppl who loves poetry doesn’t care much what others think.
Poetry is an echo of your soul, someone said…I believe in it. Thx for sharing the poem 💕💕💕

      • Thanks Ms Ray .. I do love poetry, the reading and the writing thereof …yes poetry is an echo from withing … as I have said before on my blog:
“writing is when you get stabbed
and you choose to bleed words out onto the page
instead of spilling your blood on the ground
        bleed through your words
stain the pages with your passion and pain”

  5. I agree with you 💯% when I tell someone I am a poet they stop talking and look at me again… I sometimes wonder what must be going on inside their minds. I wish I could read them and tell them that pets are not boring… Thanks for sharing. I would like to you visit my blog too and share your views. And I’m sharing the link of my foodblog too. Do visit if you have the time. http://bit.ly/dietPLAN

  6. Maybe poetry losing support is due to the fast environment we are existing in! Maybe some support is being lost because people do not “grasp” it! Me being one! 🙂 People want to read something that is deciphered for them NOW, and not wait until the grey matter kicks in to make sense of it! Because it’s an art form, one must appreciate it!
