“If you want to be a doormat you have to lay yourself down first,” – said Oscar Wilde.
The main character of the book “The Woman In Cabin 10” decided that “being a doormat” isn’t her dream so she fought against all kinds of obstacles (ex-boyfriends, naked chicks, free alcohol-sessions, rich guys, stupid swedes), oh… against anyone who’ve tried to make a pretty-dirty-fluffy-mad-‘doormat’ from her.
That’s why I love her!
If you are still fan-crying over “Titanic” and dreaming about the love of “Romeo and Juliet” – thats your book! It’s just a little bit smaller: the size of the ship/cabin, the power of the love, the beauty of the body, the luxury of being a travel journalist, the bed, the size of the tequila shots… Deal with it!
Ahhh, I see you are surprised, because it is a crime book. Let me tell you, it is kinda a “research of the crime”. Because during the whole book the hero, LO, wasn’t sure if anything happened at all (remember “The Girl On The Train”? She wasn’t sure as well, and then she’ve found out her husband was a psycho).
If you are strong enough, you’ll follow LO’s adventures on the ship untill the Chapter 26 where she’ll be showered with a truth. Finally! Yes. Something horrible did happen! The crime!!! She was too drunk to see it in the Chapter 1.
I don’t know why is it so popular lately – to make “main female characters” to suffer from alcoholism, drug issues and mental illness. The more we’ll write about it – the more we’ll believe. The more we’ll believe – the more we’ll become…
Remember old times when we wanted to be like the “heroes” in the books? Ask yourself – why? Yes! Because they were better, stronger, smarter, they were ahead of our time, they taught us to follow the dreams and fight for the right. All gone. And here we are , surrounded by the hero who’s dreaming about the bottle of vodka or a free gin-tonic.
A free mini-bar on the ship – the pledge of happiness!
Ok, you are going to tell me – sorry, Ray, but thats our reality today, we are fkn mentally-broken nation. But if this book represents our reality and us – we are totally screwed. There’s no light at the end and there’s no Agatha Christie to save our arses!
So yes, thats why I didn’t like the hero. I can’t relate.
But I respect her bravado in trying to unveil the truth…
She was struggling to find out what really happened by wandering through claustrophobic halls of the boat, by having spa-massages and sexy conversations with each guy on the ship during hundreds of lunches.
10 people on the ship – eating like a 1000. Oh, like 999. Because our Lo couldn’t eat anything. She was too busy figuring out where’s her whiskey hiding…
Still she disagrees to get down to the level of the doormat, and thats why I see this book as a very positive challenging kinda-therapeuthical story.
Of course the Evil of the story – a poor pretty guy with a rich sick wife (cancer). Wife – at the bottom of the ocean, replaced by a new one. Too easy? Yep.
I didn’t get the end.
Lo got the money (from the “lover-girl” who played a sick wife on the ship) directly from Zurich. I mean..wtf, LO!!!? Payment for the stupidity? Or payment for the silence? And how the heck “that girl” knew where’s the money? And why she have killed the rich guy? Is it a new crime?
Too many questions-
the answers are zero –
and the enjoyment “bellow the bottom”.
A quote from the story, something to think about:
“Theres no reason, on paper at least, why I need these pills to get through life. I had a great childhood, loving parents, the whole package. I wasn’t beaten, abused, or expected to get nothing but As. I had only love and support. But that wasn’t enough somehow.
My friend Erin says we all have demons inside of us, voices that whisper we’re no good, that if we dont make this promotion or ace that exam we’ll reveal to the world exactly what kind of worthless sack of skin and sinew we really are. Maybe that’s true. Maybe mine just have louder voices…”
So, if your demons are out of the control – time for reading “The Woman in Cabin 10”!
